ØyvindLAND
NONETT
Nonett is øyvindland’s second album.
Release: october 27 2023
Øyvind Frøberg Mathisen has once again brought together ØyvindLAND, but this time in an exciting expanded version of the ensemble. Since 2017, ØyvindLAND has performed over 30 concerts across Norway, and the musicians are constantly being described as some of the country's most promising talents. The original septet from their debut album "Malerier” (2020) has now expanded into a nonet, with two of Norway's most sought-after jazz musicians, woodwind player Eirik Hegdal and trombonist Erik Johannessen.
This project is just in between a large ensemble and an intimate jazz combo, and Mathisen fully harnesses the ensemble's potential. In some tracks, ØyvindLAND takes on the characteristics of a full-fledged jazz orchestra, while others are more intimate with melodies that shift in tonal color as they move between instruments. Naturally, there are also many open spaces filled with the enthusiastic presence of the ensemble's brilliant soloists!
"The nonet came about when I asked two of my favorite Norwegian jazz musicians, Eirik Hegdal and Erik Johannessen, to join an expanded version of ØyvindLAND. A studio was booked, and an intense six-month period of composition with the ambitious goal of creating something bigger and better than ever before! The music draws strong inspiration from the music of Monk, Mingus, and Andrew Hill, whom I listened to a lot in this period and therefore the album is filled up with energetic, bluesy, swinging, and, above all, melodious music. While the compositions do not contain many direct quotes from these jazz masters, they were written with their legacy in mind." - Øyvind Frøberg Mathisen
