Skurkar
SKJULTE MOTIVER
Skurkar’s debut album.
Release: September 11 2020
Please welcome your next favorite jazz band, Skurkar. This is the young, fearless and exploratory all-Scandinavian quartet consisting of baritone saxophonist Jenny (no), alto saxophonist Amalie (dk), double bassist Oda (no) and drummer Emma (se). In addition to being an interesting chordless band, they also put the somewhat unexplored genre 'detective jazz' on the map. The band was founded during autumn 2018 on the prestigious “Jazzlinja” in Trondheim, and has since then distinguished itself on e.g. Copenhagen Jazz Festival, and are now ready to release their debut album.
"Considering that the Trondheim-based quartet played its first job in September last year, it was hard not to be impressed by the mutual understanding and closeness of the interaction that was laid for a day." - 08.07.19 Henrik Palle, Politiken (DK)
It is clear to hear that these musicians want to work with music in the present with playfulness, and an exploratory and interactive interaction. Spontaneity and improvisation are central parts of the expression, and they challenge and explore the music's traditions, form and harmonies. All of the musicians have their own strong individual voice and together they complement and reinforce each other in an energetic combo. With an ensemble of two saxophones, drums and bass, the quartet creates a dry and open musical expression without harmonic limitations from chord instruments. With a twinkle in their eyes, Skurkar play music that balances between excitement and redemption, seriousness and humor, chaos and order, in a playful and energetic interplay. Each song is a story in itself, and with the album "Skjulte motiver" (Hidden Motives), Skurkar invites the listener into their whimsical universe.
